Originally JIREH, an NGO working in the Mitchells Plain and surrounding communities, approached CS Studio Architects to do a community centre. However, the organisation spread its activities over different sites and venues and decided to focus on providing a child care facility on the particular site we were asked to work on. The site is located in Portlands Mitchells Plain and lies in the centre surrounded by a residential community. JIREH provides a good holistic quality education for the children of the area. They also look into the nutritional aspects of the children and their families. The area has historically been riddled with crime and gang activity and this makes the need for such a place of safety for children even more important. The aim is to give the child an opportunity to have constructive formative years, which will hopefully empower them to cope with future challenges.
